Why the target is faster than the standard

Hitting the standard does not get you in. It earns the right to apply. Boston has been oversubscribed for years, so the B.A.A. accepts the fastest applicants relative to their standard and draws a cutoff — runners who met the standard but not the cutoff are turned away.

  • 2025: 6:51 faster than the standard was required.
  • 2024: 5:29 faster than the standard was required.

The cutoff is not announced in advance, so it cannot be planned for exactly. This calculator uses the most recent published figure as an honest default rather than implying the standard alone is enough.

The qualifying window for 2027 opened September 13, 2025, and the race must be on a certified course. Always confirm current standards with the B.A.A.
