Course & elevation

Cleveland is gently rolling rather than flat, touring downtown and running along the Lake Erie shoreline from a shared start and finish near Mall B. Bridge crossings can make GPS overstate the elevation, but the underlying terrain is moderate. Wind off the lake is the bigger variable than any single climb.

The certified route

A keyhole course through Cleveland: from Mall B on St Clair, a downtown loop, west through Tremont and Ohio City, out Detroit Ave and Lake Ave to a turnaround in Lakewood, and back via Clifton Blvd and the Shoreway to the finish on St Clair.

Start
St Clair at the center of the lamp pole with the Franz Pastorius Blvd sign on the north side of the road, 4 ft 6 in west of the center of the new pedestrian crosswalk light pole and 10 in east of the eastern edge of the DRIP gas valve cover.
Finish
Same as the start: St Clair at the lamp pole with the Franz Pastorius Blvd sign on the north side of the road.

Through, in order

Cleveland · Lakewood

What you pass

  • Miles 13 to 14: the Detroit Ave Veterans Memorial Bridge
  • Mile 19.5: the turnaround on Lake Ave in Lakewood
  • Miles 21 to 24: Clifton Blvd, Edgewater Dr, and the Shoreway
  • The Old River Rd roundabout section downtown

Worth knowing

  • Runners are restricted to the left side of Lake Ave in both directions, and run against traffic on the left on Clifton Blvd, Edgewater Dr, West Blvd, and the Shoreway ramp sections.
  • Mile marks are documented in the packet.

Transcribed from the USATF certificate for Cleveland Marathon (OH23017JHP), measured 8, 9, 16 and 25 April 2023, 24 March 2024, 2 and 3 May 2026. Where the certificate is silent, so are we.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–3Out of downtown past Public Square and the theater district; go easy on the early pace.
  • Mile 8–14Lakefront miles along Lake Erie near the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame; mind the breeze.
  • Mile 20–24Rolling return stretch toward downtown where the race tightens up.
  • Mile 26Back to Mall B downtown for the finish.

Pacing strategy

Run the rollers by effort rather than chasing splits, and respect the lakefront wind, which can swing your effort on the exposed stretches. A steady, even approach pays off over the back half.

Pacing by goal time

Checkpoint splits for four common goals at Cleveland Marathon. These are effort-even rather than pace-even: the paces shift with the course profile, so climbs are slower and descents faster by the amount the grade actually costs. For any other goal time, use the planner below.

Splits assume even effort and are adjusted for this course's climbs and descents, which cost more than they give back. A model, not a promise: wind and heat move real splits around. See how the pacing model works.

Plan your mile splits

Turn your goal time into a mile-by-mile plan for Cleveland Marathon, built from this course's elevation. The even pace approach comes pre-selected, and grade-adjusted pacing evens out your effort across the climbs and descents.

Fueling & hydration

Regular water stops along the course, each with water and Gatorade Endurance, plus GU energy gels at a few of the stations (around stops 4, 9, and 11). Fuel on a fixed schedule and take fluids whenever the lake wind picks up.

Weather

Mid-May Cleveland is mild but variable, starting in the upper 40s to mid-50s and warming into the low-60s, with frequent lakefront wind and the chance of rain.

What race morning has actually been like

The last 5 editions of Cleveland Marathon, measured at the start line rather than averaged across the month. Starts have run 4767°F, averaging 55°F.

Dew point has reached 66°F (2022). Above about 60°F, sweat stops evaporating efficiently and most runners lose pace no matter what the thermometer says. It is the number to watch here, not the air temperature.

Is Cleveland Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

Yes. The course actually finishes 2 ft higher than it starts, so no downhill adjustment applies, and nobody can accuse the time of being gravity-assisted.

This drop is our estimate rather than a figure from the course's certificate. If it sits near a threshold, confirm with the organizer.

Compare every course, how the downhill bands work, or work out your own target.
