Course & elevation

The Jersey City Marathon, formerly the New Jersey Marathon in Long Branch, has been New Jersey’s official marathon since 2023, selling out its recent editions. The course is a flat double-loop that starts in Newport and tours the waterfront, Paulus Hook, Liberty State Park, Caven Point, Greenville, Bergen, and Communipaw, with the second loop run in reverse. Total gain is around 380 feet, mostly from a couple of overpasses and the rise on Princeton Avenue.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–7Flat waterfront miles out of Newport and through Paulus Hook; settle into goal pace while the crowds are thickest.
  • Mile 8–20Liberty State Park and Caven Point with Statue of Liberty views, then the reversed second loop. The Princeton Avenue rise and the overpasses are the only real climbs, and aid can space out here, so drink at every station.
  • Mile 21–26.2Sun-exposed city miles back toward Communipaw with thinner crowds; hold your form and let the skyline pull you home.

Pacing strategy

Treat the two loops as two races: controlled and observant on loop one, committed on loop two. Don’t surge on the overpasses; crest them relaxed and rebuild rhythm on the flat. The course rewards patience, and a steady first loop sets up a strong second one.

Pacing by goal time

Checkpoint splits for four common goals at Jersey City Marathon. These are effort-even rather than pace-even: the paces shift with the course profile, so climbs are slower and descents faster by the amount the grade actually costs. For any other goal time, use the planner below.

Splits assume even effort and are adjusted for this course's climbs and descents, which cost more than they give back. A model, not a promise: wind and heat move real splits around. See how the pacing model works.

Plan your mile splits

Turn your goal time into a mile-by-mile plan for Jersey City Marathon, built from this course's elevation. The even pace approach comes pre-selected, and grade-adjusted pacing evens out your effort across the climbs and descents.

Fueling & hydration

Aid stations carry water and sports drink but can be unevenly spaced on the back half, so take fluids at every stop instead of skipping. A gel every 30–40 minutes fits this flat profile; consider carrying one spare in case a late station is thin.

Weather

Mid-April in Jersey City averages in the low 50s, often ideal, but the late city miles sit in full sun and warm years have produced hot finishes. Dress for a cool start and plan to take extra fluids on the second loop.

What race morning has actually been like

The last 4 editions of Jersey City Marathon, measured at the start line rather than averaged across the month. Starts have run 4156°F, averaging 47°F.

2025Apr 1341°F37°F10 mph51°F
2026Apr 1951°F49°F3 mph53°F

The gap between the gun and late morning matters here. In 2024 it went from 43°F at the start to 62°F by late morning. A four-hour finisher ran a materially different race from a three-hour one.

Is Jersey City Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

Yes. Start and finish sit at the same elevation, so no downhill adjustment applies and a time here is submitted as run.

This drop is our estimate rather than a figure from the course's certificate. If it sits near a threshold, confirm with the organizer.
