Course & elevation

The OC Marathon runs point-to-point from the Newport Beach coastline inland to the Orange County fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, with a gentle net descent and only mild rolling sections. The soft downward trend and smooth Southern California roads make it a friendly PR and Boston-qualifying course, with an early-morning ocean start to beat the heat.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–6Coastal start near Newport Beach with the gentle downhill trend. Ease in and let pace come.
  • Mile 7–20Rolling inland miles drifting downward; hold steady goal pace through the neighborhoods.
  • Mile 24–26.2A flatter run to the OC fairgrounds finish; push the gentle home stretch.

Pacing strategy

Run the gentle descent with relaxed, quick turnover and even effort produces a comfortably fast finish. Start conservatively on the coastal miles, since a warm May morning can build, and trust the soft downhill to deliver in the back half.

Pacing by goal time

Checkpoint splits for four common goals at OC Marathon. These are effort-even rather than pace-even: the paces shift with the course profile, so climbs are slower and descents faster by the amount the grade actually costs. For any other goal time, use the planner below.

Grade adjustment is a model, not a promise. It assumes even effort and ignores wind, heat, and how well your legs handle sustained descent — which on a steep course is often the deciding factor.

Fueling & hydration

Aid stations appear roughly every 2 miles with water and sports drink. The smooth, gently downhill rhythm makes a fixed gel schedule simple; drink early, as Southern California sun can warm the later miles.

Weather

Early-May Orange County mornings are mild and often marine-layer cool at the coast (50s–60s°F), warming inland through the race, so an early start keeps conditions fast.

Is OC Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

Yes. The course drops 75 ft net, comfortably inside the 1,500 ft threshold where Boston's downhill adjustment begins, so a time here is submitted as run.

This drop is our estimate rather than a figure from the course's certificate. If it sits near a threshold, confirm with the organizer.
