Course & elevation

Space Coast is flat and fast, run as an out-and-back along the Indian River Lagoon near the launch pads of the Kennedy Space Center. The course hugs the waterfront with palm-lined views and essentially no elevation change beyond the faintest riverside roll. As Florida’s oldest marathon, it leans hard into its space theme, with astronaut characters and rocket-shaped medals waiting at a fast, celebratory finish.

What you pass

  • North turnaround on Indian River Dr, 18 ft 11 in north of the south edge of the house at 4300 Indian River Dr
  • South turnaround on Rockledge Dr by the house at 150 Oakledge Dr
  • Half marathon point on Florida Ave at 402 Florida Ave

Worth knowing

  • The 10K and half marathon split points are certified.
  • Points are marked with yellow paint on the pavement.
  • The course was measured using the full width of the road and the shortest possible route.

Transcribed from the USATF certificate for Space Coast Marathon (FL24013JK), measured 18 July 2024. Where the certificate is silent, so are we.

Key moments

  • Mile 1–7Out along the Indian River waterfront, flat and scenic; ease onto goal pace and resist the urge to bank time.
  • Mile 13The turnaround on the out-and-back, a mental checkpoint where you can read your effort against the return leg.
  • Mile 24–26.2The flat riverfront run-in to the space-themed finish, where an even early effort leaves room to close fast.

Pacing strategy

A flat out-and-back that rewards even or slightly negative pacing. Use the turnaround at halfway to honestly assess your effort before committing to the return. The lack of terrain means the only thing to manage is the warmth, so keep the early miles controlled and let a disciplined first half set up the finish.

Pacing by goal time

Checkpoint splits for four common goals at Space Coast Marathon. These are effort-even rather than pace-even: the paces shift with the course profile, so climbs are slower and descents faster by the amount the grade actually costs. For any other goal time, use the planner below.

Splits assume even effort and are adjusted for this course's climbs and descents, which cost more than they give back. A model, not a promise: wind and heat move real splits around. See how the pacing model works.

Plan your mile splits

Turn your goal time into a mile-by-mile plan for Space Coast Marathon, built from this course's elevation. The even pace approach comes pre-selected, and grade-adjusted pacing evens out your effort across the climbs and descents.

Fueling & hydration

Aid stations roughly every 1.5–2 miles with water and sports drink. The riverside warmth and humidity drive up fluid needs even in November, so drink from the early stations and keep gels on a fixed schedule rather than waiting for a dip.

Weather

Late-November central Florida is usually mild but can be humid (50s–70s), with a warm, muggy morning off the lagoon the main threat to a goal time.

What race morning has actually been like

The last 5 editions of Space Coast Marathon, measured at the start line rather than averaged across the month. Starts have run 5172°F, averaging 62°F.

Dew point has reached 73°F (2022). Above about 60°F, sweat stops evaporating efficiently and most runners lose pace no matter what the thermometer says. It is the number to watch here, not the air temperature.

Is Space Coast Marathon a good Boston qualifier?

Yes. Start and finish sit at the same elevation, so no downhill adjustment applies and a time here is submitted as run.

This drop is our estimate rather than a figure from the course's certificate. If it sits near a threshold, confirm with the organizer.
